Derek Gillespie Wins Big Break P.E.I.

Derek Gillespie

Old friends returned to cheer on the competitors Derek Gillespie and Blair O’Neal as they played the final 9 holes of the series at the Rodd Mill River Resort Prince Edward Island.

Here is what happened:

Derek Started by missing a birdie putt on the 10th by a whisker and finished the hole with a par, meanwhile Blair shot a birdie and done a fist pump which may have aggrevated Derek at the start. Meaning after one hole Blair had a one stroke lead at -1.

On the 11th hole, Blair and Derek’s drives both rolled off the green and onto the fringe on the par 3. Derek made a good par and blair made a bogey to mean both players were at Even after 2 holes.

Hole 12: Derek started with an excellent tee shot, and Blair’s was also perfect straight down the middle. Second shot, Derek made an excellent lob wedge approach as did Blair but, she missed her birdie putt and made par, and Derek made a perfect putt to make a birdie to take a one shot lead.

13th hole, Derek makes a solid tee shot and Blair ended up on the rough. on the 2nd shot, Derek was lucky to not find the water when his golf ball looked like it was heading to the pond, and Blair made the fairway, she then made the green on her next shot. Derek put his approach shot within 3 feet of the hole. Putting: Blair missed her 30 footer for birdie and ended the hole with a par and Derek made his 3 foot putt to make birdie and go to -2 with Blair at even par.

14th: derek killed his tee shot. Blair ended up in the rough. Second shot: blair hit it very close to the hole and dereks rolled off and onto the fringe. derek made a good roll and finished the hole with a par and blair missed her birdie putt to also make par.

On the 15th: Blair found the rough and had a terrible lie then ended up in a sand bunker meaning she would finish the hole with a bogey. Derek looked to be in trouble but got to the green in 2 strokes to make a par on the par 4 and take a 3 shot lead.

Hole 16: Derek and Blair both ended up in the rough from the tee. Derek’s second hooked round the trees and ended up missing the green, Blair’s golf ball hit the trees and fell down into a sand bunker and she only just made the green playing out of the trap. Derek made a fairly good shot and placed the ball around 20 feet from the hole for his par putt, but he missed it meaning he would make bogey. Blairs par putt overshot the hole by quite a distance meaning her putt for bogey would be very difficult but she made it.

The scores heading into the final 2 holes were:

Derek at -1
Blair at +2 meaning she would need Derek to make a big mistake, a Hole-in-one on the 17th, and maybe even an eagle on the 18th hole.

The 17th hole par 3: Derek and Blair both hit the green and both players made par.

The Final hole of Big Break Prince Edward Island: The winner was obviously decided meaning Derek Gillespie would win $100,000, a $10,000 shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods, and an endorsment contract worth $10,000 from Adams Golf and access to all of the Adams Golf Clubs and Equipment. Blair obviously knew she couldn’t defeat Derek on the final hole but showed her sporting compassion by finishing the hole with a smile on her face. Blair who finished 2nd won a 5 night vacation to a Rodd golf resort for 5 nights.

So with the series decided and Derek the winner we hope to see him out on the larger tours very soon. as for the other competitors, we can only hope that one day soon they will get there very own Big Break.

Derek said: I didn’t know how to react. i’ve never won $100,000 before

Brenda McLarnon leaves Big Break Prince Edward Island

Brenda-Big-Break

Brenda McLarnon has been eliminated from Big Break Prince Edward Island.

The final 3 would see Canadian Derek Gillespie from Oshawa, Blair O’Neal from Phoeniz Arizona USA, and Brenda McLarnon from Dublin Ireland compete in 9 holes of stroke play with the player who had the lowest score being eliminated from the competition.

Derek played solidly throughout and finished one-under-par to be safe and on to the final show against blair who finished 2nd with a score of +2. Brenda lost by one stroke finishing with a total score of +3.

Brenda’s first tee shot didn’t help her by landing in the trees and getting a bad start with a bogey. and she didn’t look to be able to come back from it after dropping 2 more strokes on the 3rd and the 7th.

Brenda’s hopes of survival looked slim, but Blair made a few mistakes including a bad tee shot which caught a lucky break by hitting a tree and bouncing out into the rough. She would however manage to make par on the final hole to mean Brenda would be eliminated.

Brenda has been a great competitor through this series of Big Break, and we hope she will one day make it into the LPGA Tour.

We will bring you the Result from next weeks final which will see the winner of Big Break Prince Edward Island take home $100,000, an endorsement contract with adams golf worth $10,000 plus unlimited access to their golf equipment, and a $10,000 shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Gerina Mendoza Exits Big Break P.E.I

gerina_mendoza

Gerina Mendoza has left the golf competition Big Break Prince Edward Island after being knocked out by Derek in the elimination challenge.

Gerina battled it out with Brenda in the immunity challenge and come up short by one shot and had to face Derek who lost against Blair in the other immunity challenge.

Brenda who has been a surprisingly strong contestant, was tied with Gerina after 2 holes of stroke play and they had to decide the winner by re-playing the 2nd hole in which Brenda would be victorious, and earn herself immunity and a spot in the final 3.

Derek played Blair in the Immunity challenge, and looked to be feeling the pressure when he played a terrible Tee Shot on both holes ending up with a total score of +2. Blair however played extremely well and made Birdie on both to end up at -2, earn herself a spot in the final 3, and also made a huge statement to her other competitors leading towards the final.

The Elimination challenge would see Derek and Gerina play a further 2 holes of stroke play. On the first hole, Derek again made a terrible Tee shot and left himself with an awkward second shot from within the trees. Gerina meanwhile seemed to have the upper hand after playing an incredible Tee shot straight down the middle.

Derek’s second shot from within the trees was good enough to leave himself with a chance for par by getting it onto the fairway. Gerina stepped up to take her second golf shot and ended up leaving herself with a very long putt for par. On his third shot, Derek showed he wasn’t out of it with an excellent wedge shot to leave himself with a 1-2 foot putt for par.

Gerina’s putt for birdie wasn’t good enough and ended up making par as-well as Derek who holed his short putt.

With the sun setting on the final hole to be played which would be the 18th, both players step up to the tee.

Both Derek and Gerina would end up with there shots in the rough and a tough approach to the green. Gerina stepped up and launched her ball onto the green but left herself with a very long 30-50 foot putt for birdie. next up it was Derek who had the shorter approach but was still in the rough, and he made an excellent golf shot to within 6 feet of the hole.

Gerina now had to make an enormous 40 footer to make birdie and put the pressure on Derek but left it short to give Derek a huge advantage. All Derek had to do was hole his short putt and make the final three.

He Stepped up to make the putt, and as soon as he had seen it the cup went to console Gerina on her loss.

Gerina was obviously upset at being knocked out of the competition as were Brenda her close friend on the show, Blair and Derek.

All the players had noted Gerina as being one of the strongest golfers on the show and looked certain to make the final.

Gerina Mendoza will most likely return to her current golf tournament the Duramed Tour, but will most definitely be a name to look out for in the future in golf’s LPGA Tour.

Next week will see Derek, Blair and Brenda in the final 3 of Big Break Prince Edward Island.
