Tiger wins his own Golf Tournement

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods has won the AT&T National at Congressional.

Tiger Woods who was the host of the tournement has won by defeating Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan.

Woods and Kim were tied for the lead heading into the final round at -10 and would be paired together for the very first time at Congressional Country Club.

But, Before Kim and Woods would tee off, Hunter Mahan had begun his charge for the lead playing a very solid round of golf which meant he would finish with a score of 62 to complete the tournement at -12 which Kim and Tiger would have to beat.

Kim started with a birdie but made 2 bogeys to finish his final round with a score of 71 to finish at -9 meaning he would be third at the tournement he won last year.

Woods meanwhile only made one bogey on his round along with 4 birdies to finish at 13 under par and beat Mahan by one stroke.

Woods said earlier in the tournement that he wanted “to be a greedy host” and win his own tournement and done so today.

Kim may have been victim to the aura of Tiger but it can only help to improve his game and maybe one day we will be calling Anthony Kim the world number 1.

In Other Golf News:

On the European Tour,  Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood would finish tied for the top spot meaning they would have to decide the winner by a playoff.

Both hit their drives into the rough on the 470 yard par four, but on the second shot Westwood would find the water, after his chip from the drop zone he left himself with a 30 foot putt for bogey which he slid right, leaving his 24 year old opponent two putts for the title, of which he only needed one.

Kaymer wins €666,660 and gets himself back into the top 20 of the world rankings.

And on the LPGA Tour Eunjung Yi has defeated Morgan Pressel at a playoff for the Corning Classic.

Morgan Pressel Leads the Corning Classic

morgan-pressel (299x264)

Morgan Pressel, Song-Hee Kim and Laura Diaz made the most of the defending champion’s absence at the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic. Each shot a 7-under 64 after Paula Creamer withdrew, taking a one-shot lead over Michelle Wie and Suzann Pettersen after Thursday’s opening round at Highland Meadows. Creamer, who shot a personal-best and course-record 60 in last year’s first round, withdrew because of a thumb injury moments before her morning tee time.

Pressel was second at the Farr two years ago to five-time winner Se Ri Pak. She didn’t have a bogey and birdied four holes in a row late in her round. Her 64 matched her best round since joining the tour in 2006.

After bursting on the scene with a runner-up finish at the 2005 U.S. Women’s Open, Pressel was considered a budding LPGA star, and became the youngest player to win a major at the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship. She’s won only once since, and is trying to end a victory drought just like her co-leaders. Kim, who is winless in 56 career LPGA Tour events, twice birdied three consecutive holes during her round. Diaz hasn’t won in seven years, but holed a wedge shot for eagle at the par-4 17th hole to move to the top of the leaderboard.

Anthony Kim sets the pace.

Anthony Kim

Anthony Kim leads the AT&T National Golf Tournement.

Kim set the course record with an 8-under 62 for a two-shot lead over AT&T National host Tiger Woods an 2 others.

The 24-year-old has not won since his victory here at Congressional Country Club last year, as he was slowed by an assortment of injuries that caused his game to slip just as he was being anointed as the next great American player.

It was the best round of his PGA Tour career, although Kim walked off the par-5 ninth green slightly perturbed after narrowly missing a 10-foot birdie putt. Apparently, eight birdies wasn’t enough.

Anthony Kim has set the pace early and looks to be in contention to retain his title, but there is still 3 more rounds to play.

Kaymer Leads at Le Golf National

Martin Kaymer

German star Martin Kaymer leads after round one at Le Golf National.

The 24 year old began the Open de France ALSTOM with a course record-equalling round of 62.

So bad was Kaymer’s right foot that as well as being seen by a doctor he had a hole cut in his golf shoe to allow him to play Wednesday’s pro-am.

With the help of his three partners he won that by four with an amazing 16 under par best-ball of 55, but to be only seven worse than that on his own underlined what a massive talent he is.

Kaymer’s round actually began with a bogey, but after five birdies in the next nine holes he chipped in for eagle at the long third and finished with three more birdies for an inward 30.

Nick Dougherty followed up his win at the BMW International Open with a 66 and Ryder Cup Captain Colin Montgomerie, without a top ten finish since he was runner-up in this event last year, returned a 69.

Miguel Angel Jiménez, celebrated his 500th European Tour event but began with a hook into the water, he did however hit back for a 67 and fellow Spaniard Pablo Larrazábal, the defending champion, matched that with five birdies in the last six holes – after a triple bogey eight on the ninth.

Tom Gillis is the Players Cup Winner

Tom Gillis 1

Tom Gillis Has won the the Nationwide Tour Players Cup. Gillis broke from the pack early in the final round of the and went on to shoot a round of 2-under-par 70 and earn his first Nationwide Tour win.

Gillis held a one-shot lead at the start of the day and stretched his lead to five shots midway through the round at the Pete Dye Golf Club, only to see it drop down to two following a double-bogey. Gillis then steadied himself down the stretch with four closing pars to win by three strokes over Cameron Percy and Roger Tambellini.

Gillis posted a total of 15-under (273) and collected $108,000, taking him from No. 108 to No. 10 on the Nationwide Tour money list

“This gives me a start to what I want to do, and that’s being in the top 25 and graduate back to the PGA TOUR,” said Gillis, who played on Tour in 2003 and 2005. “I wish we were done right now.”

This victory was the first for the 40-year old from Michigan, but it has definately been coming. Gillis, who had conditional status at the beginining of the year, didn’t qualify to play in the Nationwide Tour’s first eight events. His first start was The BMW Charity Pro-Am in May, and a tie for 19th was the result. After that, he made four cuts in four starts and had posted par-or-better scores in 14 of 16 rounds.

Nielsen Clinches the title

Lonnie Nielsen (450x300)

Nielsen’s win was only his second on the Champions Tour. He won the 2007 Commerce Bank Championship, and his best finish this year was a tie for third at the Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am in April.

Lonnie Nielsen’s score of 63 is the lowest final round by a winner on the Champions Tour this year.

One behind Tseng and McPherson were rookie Stacy Lewis, Mika Miyazato and Haeji Kang.

Shin held a four-stroke lead at the start of the final round at the tricky Locust Hill course, and she never looked in danger of being caught, even after she picked up two straight bogeys near the close as an afternoon downpour produced a number of errors.

Jiyai Shin earned $300,000 for her win, taking her to the top of the LPGA money list with $1 million.

Perry made birdy on the 15th, and put the tournament away by making another birdie on the 17th after hitting a 164 yard approach shot to within 8 feet of the hole. Kenny Perry was strong throughout the tournement and was a very worthy winner. Goydos Looked like he could be a threat but Perry Prevailed to win the Championship.

Nick Dougherty wins the BMW International Open

Nick Dougherty

England’s Nick Dougherty has won the European Tour BMW International Open.

Dougherty claimed his first European Tour title for two years with a one shot victory over Rafa Echenique at the BMW International Open. Dougherty who started the day in third position tied with David Drysdale at three shots behind Retief Goosen, made nine birdies and just a one bogey for the round which secured a score of eight under for the day with 64 bringing his total for the tournement to 22 under par.

It looked like being a comfortable win for Dougherty, but Argentina’s Echenique reached 21 under par thanks to an albatross two at the par five last. That completed a round of 62, meaning Dougherty needed to par his last three holes.

Dougherty comfortably parred the 16th and 17th, and for the first time this week Dougherty found the fairway at the last having visited the rough twice and water once from the tee this week.

Retief Goosen who looked to be the wire-to-wire winner, could only manage a one under 71 to finish with a total of 18 under, while 51 year old Bernhard Langer – second overnight and looking to become the oldest winner in The European Tour’s history – Finished with a 72 and a share of ninth place.

This was Dougherty’s first win where he has come from behind in the final round and secures him a spot at the World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational, World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions, the Mercedes-Benz Championship and should also be enough to secure a berth at The Open Championship at Turnberry next month.

In fourth was Chile’s Felipe Aguilar, Scot David Drysdale, Spain’s Miguel Angel Jiménez and England’s Graeme Storm one shot behind Goosen in.
