Anthony Kim sets the pace.

Anthony Kim

Anthony Kim leads the AT&T National Golf Tournement.

Kim set the course record with an 8-under 62 for a two-shot lead over AT&T National host Tiger Woods an 2 others.

The 24-year-old has not won since his victory here at Congressional Country Club last year, as he was slowed by an assortment of injuries that caused his game to slip just as he was being anointed as the next great American player.

It was the best round of his PGA Tour career, although Kim walked off the par-5 ninth green slightly perturbed after narrowly missing a 10-foot birdie putt. Apparently, eight birdies wasn’t enough.

Anthony Kim has set the pace early and looks to be in contention to retain his title, but there is still 3 more rounds to play.

Paul Goydos takes the lead

Paul Goydos

Paul Goydos has taken the lead at the PGA Tour Travelers Championsip. Goydos birdied five holes on the back nine Saturday and now holds a one-stroke lead over Kenny Perry after the third round of the golf tournement.

Goydos’ 28-foot putt from off the green on the 16th highlighted a third-round 63, tying Hunter Mahan for the best round of the day.

Kenny Perry, who led after each of the first two rounds, had a seemingly comfortable three-stroke lead after birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th. But he dropped a stroke on the 14th after making a bogey and Paul Goydos took advantage, making four straight birdies starting on the 13th.

After another rain delay of just over an hour, both golfers parred in. Perry missed a 5-foot birdie try on 18 that would have given him a share of the lead and then just minutes after Goydos misread the break on a 10-footer.

The final round is set to get underway tomorrow and it looks like it’s going to be a very entertaining day of gol.

Nationwide Tour Players Cup Round 1

Brad Iles

New Zealand’s Brad Iles leads the Nationwide Tour Players Cup after round one after posting a round of 7-under-par 65 late Thursday afternoon. Iles holds a one-stroke margin over Canadian Brad Fritsch and a two-shot edge over Ron Whittaker, Steve Wheatcroft and Brian Stuard.

Iles slowly moved up the leaderboard late in the day thanks to eight birdies that were evenly spaced out on each nine.

Fritsch was leading but it was brief, lasting only about 30 minutes before Iles — who was playing in the penultimate group took over. Fritsch’s round was highlighted by six birdies in an eight-hole stretch but the real credit went to his play off the tee. The 31-year old  hit 13 of 14 fairways (93 percent), well above a season average that checks in just below 65 percent.

Other First Round Notes:

• Two-time winner Kevin Johnson, No. 2 on the Nationwide Tour money list and the leading money winner in this week’s field, posted a 3-over 75. Johnson made two double bogeys and a triple bogey on his opening nine and shot a 6-over 42. He then made three birdies on the inward nine for a 33.

• Jason Enloe, a playoff winner of last week’s Fort Smith Classic fired a 2-under 70 and is tied for 25th.

• Neal Lancaster (79) withdrew from the Golf Tournement after the first round.

The second round gets underway tomorrow and we will keep you up to date with all the results.

ricky-barnes

Ricky Barnes is still leading the 2009 US Open at the Bethpage Black after finishing the third round with a score of 70 to go into the final round with a lead of over Lucas Glover of one shot at 8-under par.

Ricky Barnes was at one point -11 after starting the day extremely well but, did have a few moments during the day where his golf swing looked off and he made a few bogies, but he had a pretty stable round of scoring and looks fairly comfortable in the lead.

Lucas Glover who is currently in second, had some pretty poor holes and looked to be almost gifting the tournement to Barnes in the earlier stages of the round, but Fought back with some solid golf shots and made some much needed birdies to finish the round with a par 70 and back to 7-under par .

David Duval and Ross Fisher are currently tied for third at -3, and Phil Mickelson is currently tied for 4th at -2 after having a very solid round to put himself in good stead for the final round.

Tiger woods looks to be out of contention barring a miraculous comeback. Woods Currently sits at +1, but had a good round today shooting 68.  If Tiger Woods is to make a comeback, it will have to be a record breaking comeback and the round of his life.

The final round is set to start this evening and be concluded on monday.
