Tom Gillis is the Players Cup Winner

Tom Gillis Has won the the Nationwide Tour Players Cup. Gillis broke from the pack early in the final round of the and went on to shoot a round of 2-under-par 70 and earn his first Nationwide Tour win.

Gillis held a one-shot lead at the start of the day and stretched his lead to five shots midway through the round at the Pete Dye Golf Club, only to see it drop down to two following a double-bogey. Gillis then steadied himself down the stretch with four closing pars to win by three strokes over Cameron Percy and Roger Tambellini.

Gillis posted a total of 15-under (273) and collected $108,000, taking him from No. 108 to No. 10 on the Nationwide Tour money list

“This gives me a start to what I want to do, and that’s being in the top 25 and graduate back to the PGA TOUR,” said Gillis, who played on Tour in 2003 and 2005. “I wish we were done right now.”

This victory was the first for the 40-year old from Michigan, but it has definately been coming. Gillis, who had conditional status at the beginining of the year, didn’t qualify to play in the Nationwide Tour’s first eight events. His first start was The BMW Charity Pro-Am in May, and a tie for 19th was the result. After that, he made four cuts in four starts and had posted par-or-better scores in 14 of 16 rounds.

After 3 rounds of play at the Nationwide Tour Players Cup, we have a new leader.

Tom Gillis who started the day sitting in 5th position on the leaderboard is the new leader of the Players Cup Golf Tournement. Even with a double bogey on his scorecard, Tom Gillis shot a 6-under 66 to take the 54-hole lead in West Virginia with an overall total of 13 under.

Gillis holds a lead of one stroke over Kyle Reifers who shot 64 today and Jeff Gove who scored 68 to finish at -12 after 3 rounds.

David Peoples who was in the lead after the second round, has dropped to 6th position and is tied with Ron Whittaker Chris Baryla, and Jhonatton Vegas at 10-under-par.

News From the Nationwide Tour Players Cup

David Peoples is the leader of the Nationwide Tour Players Cup after 2 rounds of play.

Peoples shot a 65 today to finish his first 2 rounds with a total of 10-under-par and take 2 shot lead over Craig Barlow, Jeff Gove and Ryan Armour who are currently tied for second.

Peoples who played well in the first round and was T-10 at the end of yesterday, Started his second round on the 10th tee and made 4 Birdies on his first nine. He then made bogey on the par 4 1st after making the turn but would finish the day strong with another 4 birdies in a row on the 2nd-5th holes.

Yesterday’s leader Bradley Iles had a terrible round today shooting a 76 4-over-par to drop back to -3 and is now tied for 25th place.

Unlike the rest of todays matches held in the US, the Nationwide Tour Players Cup was the only one not to be suspended due to poor weather conditions.

New Zealand’s Brad Iles leads the Nationwide Tour Players Cup after round one after posting a round of 7-under-par 65 late Thursday afternoon. Iles holds a one-stroke margin over Canadian Brad Fritsch and a two-shot edge over Ron Whittaker, Steve Wheatcroft and Brian Stuard.

Iles slowly moved up the leaderboard late in the day thanks to eight birdies that were evenly spaced out on each nine.

Fritsch was leading but it was brief, lasting only about 30 minutes before Iles — who was playing in the penultimate group took over. Fritsch’s round was highlighted by six birdies in an eight-hole stretch but the real credit went to his play off the tee. The 31-year old  hit 13 of 14 fairways (93 percent), well above a season average that checks in just below 65 percent.

Other First Round Notes:

• Two-time winner Kevin Johnson, No. 2 on the Nationwide Tour money list and the leading money winner in this week’s field, posted a 3-over 75. Johnson made two double bogeys and a triple bogey on his opening nine and shot a 6-over 42. He then made three birdies on the inward nine for a 33.

• Jason Enloe, a playoff winner of last week’s Fort Smith Classic fired a 2-under 70 and is tied for 25th.

• Neal Lancaster (79) withdrew from the Golf Tournement after the first round.
